Turkey will file a complaint with the WTO about U.S. imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum products

Aug. 17, 2018

According to media reports, Turkish Trade Minister Peggy Jane said that Turkey plans to file a complaint with the WTO on the tariffs on steel and aluminum products.

At the Foreign Ambassadors and International Organizations’ Congress in Turkey, Peke Jane said: “Turkey has invited the United States to accept WTO arbitration, and the US has already received an invitation. Thus, we have filed a complaint within the framework of the WTO.”

US President Trump announced on August 10 that the import tariffs on Turkish steel and aluminum products will be raised to 50% and 20%, respectively, while the White House said that this move has nothing to do with trade and other issues.

Turkey issued a presidential decree on August 15 to impose import duties on some of the goods produced in the United States. According to the presidential decree, goods subject to tariffs include alcohol, the tax rate rose to 140%; the automobile tax rate rose to 120%; the cigarette and cosmetics tax rate rose to 60%; and the rice tax rate rose to 50%.

Turkish Trade Minister Ruhsar Pekcan said that Ankara doubled the tariffs on 22 US imports and added a total of $533 million.
