Brazil's flat steel exports hit a new high in May

According to data released recently by the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade of Brazil, Brazil’s flat steel exports reached a new record in May.


In May, Brazil's flat steel exports reached 648,000 tons, a substantial increase of 270.2% from 473,000 tons in the same period in 2018, a significant increase of 260% from April this year. This amount set a new record for Brazilian flat steel exports in a single month. According to data from the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade of Brazil, the highest export volume of flat steel in the previous month was 416,000 tons in September 2015.


In the first five months of this year, Brazil exported 1.464 million tons of flat steel, up 40.9% year-on-year; the export volume reached 925.2 million US dollars, up 24.3% year-on-year. However, from the perspective of average export prices, Brazil's flat steel export prices from January to May were US$623/ton, down 11.7% year-on-year.


From the point of view of export destinations, as of the end of May, Brazil’s main destination for flat steel exports was Vietnam, accounting for 23% of total exports; exports to the United States, Argentina and Colombia accounted for 14%, 12% and 11% respectively.
