EU will counter the steel and aluminum tariffs and stick to WTO rules

Jun. 12, 2018

In response to the decision of President Trump to withdraw its endorsement of the joint communique of the G7 Summit on the 10th, German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed his disappointment that day. Merkel said at the same time that the EU will take countermeasures against the United States to impose steel and aluminum tariffs.

On the 10th, U.S. President Trump sent a message on his Twitter that he had instructed the U.S. representatives not to sign the joint communique of the G7 summit. According to German media reports, Trump had previously said that the United States agreed to this document. In response to the latest developments, Merkel made the above statement when he was interviewed on a German TV on the same day.

Merkel described the Trump decision as “watchful” and "somewhat depressing." Just after the United States announced its recent decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum for economies including the European Union, Canada has announced that it will adopt tit-for-tat measures. Merkel said that the EU will also take countermeasures.

"We will not let people cut it again. We will also take measures." Merkel also stressed that the EU will continue to adhere to the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The German Chancellery official website issued a press release on the same day and pointed out that the United States and the European Union failed to reach agreement on Iran’s nuclear agreement, climate policy, free trade and other issues. Merkel stated in the German Bundestag before leaving for Canada to attend the G7 summit that Germany will work to safeguard its focus on trade during and during the chairmanship of the Group of Twenty (G20) and Italy last year as Chairman of the G7. The results achieved by climate issues do not reverse.
