Focus on key national needs and key material development priorities

Dec. 22, 2020

Ganyong introduced the development status, demand and development focus of key materials for key national needs from the aspects of advanced non-ferrous metal materials, carbon fiber and its composite materials, high temperature alloys, special alloys for high-end equipment, and new rare earth materials.

Regarding advanced non-ferrous metal materials, Qian Yong pointed out that in light alloy materials, my country has a low-end product structure, a weak foundation for independent innovation, and a serious lack of independent support capabilities in some high-end applications. "In this regard, we should focus on the application requirements of advanced civil aircraft, offshore oil engineering and other high-end equipment, and overcome the design of high-performance light alloy materials, metallurgical quality and organization control, residual stress characterization and control, and product consistency, stability and reliability. In terms of new titanium alloys, Qian Yong introduced that China has formed five alloy systems including high-temperature titanium alloys (350 degrees Celsius to 600 degrees Celsius). There are also titanium alloys for aerospace use, flame retardant titanium alloys, and titanium alloys. Five alloy systems, including base composite materials, low-cost titanium alloys, and functional titanium alloys, are gradually being developed.

Focus on key national needs and key material development priorities

Carbon fiber and its composite materials are the vanguard of the material revolution. "With the rapid development of downstream industries, it is estimated that my country's carbon fiber demand will be about 150,000 tons by 2030, and its composite materials will be about 250,000 tons, involving high-strength, high-strength medium-model, high-strength high-modulus, high-strength, high-modulus, and high-toughness products. Gan Yong pointed out that, compared with the advanced level of foreign countries, the overall development level of domestic carbon fiber is 10 to 15 years behind, and composite materials are more than one generation behind. He said that the current development focus of carbon fiber and its composite materials in China includes cutting-edge innovation technology of carbon fiber and its composite materials, large-scale and stable preparation technology of carbon fiber series, domestic carbon fiber reinforced composite material technology, domestic carbon fiber composite material application technology, etc.

Superalloy is an irreplaceable core material for hot end components in aero engines, gas turbines and heavy-duty rocket engines. "The consumption of superalloys in advanced aero-engines accounts for 40% to 60%. With the continuous deepening of the country’s high-quality development, it is estimated that by 2030, the annual demand for superalloys in China’s aero-engine and gas-turbine manufacturing, overhaul and replacement parts The amount will reach more than 100,000 tons.” Qian Yong pointed out that China’s superalloys still need to improve product composition consistency and uniformity of organization, master the control technology of single crystal growth of complex hollow blades, and thoroughly solve the inclusions of powder superalloy deformation technology. Work hard on troubles and other aspects.

"Special alloys for high-end equipment are a prominent representative of the ‘hollowing’ of my country’s manufacturing industry. High-end heat-resistant alloys, corrosion-resistant alloys, special steel/alloys and their key components are heavily dependent on imports, and the problem of being restricted by others is prominent.” Qian Yong pointed out. In terms of national strategic pillar industries such as major energy, marine engineering and major transportation engineering, it is urgent to independently develop special alloys and related components for high-end equipment in my country. Among them, the exploitation of deep-sea resources is highly dependent on offshore engineering equipment, while my country only masters 20% of the core technology of offshore engineering equipment. There is a shortage of special alloys for manufacturing the "heart" part, and there is an embarrassing situation where high-end blanks and low-ends cannot be used. Starting from the deep-sea special material system; almost 100% of high-end bearings need to be introduced, and the amount of introduction is large, such as high-speed railways that introduce 500,000 sets of high-end bearings every year.

"Rare earths are a strategic resource with a major international voice in our country." Gan Yong said that in addition to being widely used in military, rail transit, electronic appliances and other fields, new rare earth materials also play an important supporting role in the upgrading of the automotive industry. There are more than 100 parts requiring rare earth in high-end cars. He pointed out that in the future, my country will also need to focus on high-performance rare earth magnetic materials, high-performance rare earth optical functional materials, a new generation of rare earth catalytic materials, high energy density rare earth hydrogen storage materials, green preparation of ultra-high purity rare earth materials and their corresponding application technologies. Continue to exert force.

"In general, my country needs to build a policy system to promote the development of new materials, create a material independent innovation system, adhere to the sustainable development of material R&D, production and application, implement intellectual property strategies, and form a development path for my country's new material industry to make a comprehensive breakthrough. The core technology of high-end new materials makes greater contributions to social and economic development." Gan Yong said.
