Arcelor Mittal plans to cut its North American steel production

Apr. 21, 2020

Affected by the new Coronary Pneumonia epidemic, overseas automobile manufacturing plants have been closed one after another, resulting in a substantial reduction in steel demand. At the same time, ArcelorMittal USA currently has 22 employees diagnosed with new coronary pneumonia. Under the predicament of internal and external striking, Arcelor Mittal is planning to reduce its North American steel production, and plans to shut down its No. 4 blast furnace in the Indiana Port Plant and No. 6 blast furnace in Cleveland, Ohio. After the shutdown of these blast furnaces, Arcelor Mittal had only four blast furnaces in operation in the United States.

Arcelor Mittal USA said it is planning to work with the United Steelworkers Union to find job opportunities for related workers in factories in other regions to minimize the impact of the blast furnace shutdown on employees.

The impact of Arcelor Mittal US ’s production cuts on full-year output is currently unclear. It is understood that Arcelor Mittal's steel plant in the Indiana port of the United States has an annual output of about 5.81 million tons, and its No. 6 blast furnace in Cleveland, Ohio, has an annual output of about 1.5 million tons.

In addition, Arcelor Mittal's Dofasco steel mill in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, also reduced production. Dofasco Steel's No. 3 blast furnace has an annual production capacity of approximately 716,000 tons, making it the smallest of the three blast furnaces in the plant. Arcelor Mittal Dofasco annual shipments of steel are approximately 4.08 million tons.

Earlier, on March 23, Arcelor Mittal Ukraine Kryvyi Rih announced that in order to reduce the risk of the spread of the new coronary pneumonia epidemic, the company decided to minimize the number of personnel on the production site. At present, the company's Blooming No. 1 processing plant (mainly producing billets), Rolling shop No. 1 rolling mill's No. 3 light rolling mill, central power laboratory and power maintenance plant operations have been almost completely stopped. Some employees are on vacation or working remotely.
